Makhachkala Mayor Said Amirov, who was remanded into custody earlier, has been admitted to hospital in satisfactory condition after an attempt to commit suicide, Russian Federal Penitentiary Institutions Service (FSIN) spokesperson Kristina Belousova told Interfax on Friday.
"He is currently being treated in the hospital. Doctors have described his condition as satisfactory," Belousova said.
She confirmed that Amirov, who is suspected of masterminding the murder of investigator Arsen Gadzhibekov, tried to kill himself in his cell at Moscow's Lefortovo remand center.
Social networking websites reported the incident on Thursday.
Amirov's lawyers refused to comment on the reports then.
