Police started making arrests during a demonstration in central Moscow against Thursday's jailing of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who received a five-year term on a charge of embezzlement, an Interfax correspondent reported from the scene.
The demonstration was not officially permitted.
Two prison vans stopped near the Moskva hotel on Okhotny Ryad Street, and police who jumped off them detained several protesters who came out into the roadway.
A little later one more activist, who was holding a poster, was detained.
Earlier several other protesters were arrested on Manezhnaya Square, which lies next to the Kremlin.
