Russia Beyond the Headlines debuts A week in Russia by RBTH, a new photo-blog that records the impressions and adventures of the RBTH team across the country
Over the past few years, communication has become increasingly intertwined with the power of visual representation. Pictures are no longer a simple companion to words and text, as they often become the message themselves.
We take photos on our camera phones, we Instagram them, and we share them with our friends as well as strangers – a transmission of sensations, memories and emotions in real time.
A week in Russia by RBTH is a new photo-blog published every Friday on the Russia Beyond the Headlines website which aims at presenting to the readers an unedulcorated portrayal of Russia through an innovative and original medium.
Each week the RBTH team will put together a new photo-gallery of seven images, one photo per day of the week, assembling the poetic, mysterious and magnetic narrative of a never-ending journey across the country.
Members of the RBTH team will personally take the photos featured on the blog using their cameras, tablets, and mobile devices.
“The members of the RBTH team take dozens of pictures every day. And day by day this photo collection becomes a larger reflection of real life in Russia from the point of view of RBTH. Anything from global processes to tiny details can get under our lenses – national holidays and mass protests, cute little pets and gloomy factories,” says RBTH Executive Multimedia Editor Elena Potapova.
The RBTH team is made up of young, enthusiastic and motivated individuals – and the blog will try to channel that spirit and share it with the readers. “We believe that Russia is full of pictures worth seeing and emotions worth feeling. We're eager to capture these special moments in all their natural charm and show them to you,” says Potapova.
The team will often feature images taken from their personal accounts on Instagram, thus offering a much more candid and creative take on everyday Russia.
“The readers of RBTH have the great chance to see Russia through the eyes of real people living and working here. And see it in a format they are used to. It’s a unique chance to get a first-hand account of what Russia is really like,” as Potapova puts it.
A week in Russia by RBTH invites you to see for yourself the more spontaneous and lesser-known side of Russia, beyond the image conveyed by the mainstream media. Ready? Click here to start the journey!
