Russian military experts carried out a secret inspection of the Vandenberg missile defense base in California as part of the New START arms treaty, The Washington Free Beacon online newspaper reported, citing sources in the Barack Obama administration.

Five silos earlier used to launch intercontinental ballistics missiles that were then modified for antimissile launches were inspected.

The New START arms treaty signed in 2010 envisions a one-time inspection of these particular silo-based launchers.

A Pentagon official confirmed that the inspection was aimed at ensuring compliance with the New START treaty, the newspaper said.

A representative of the U.S. Department of State declined to comment, but he confirmed that the inspection was intended to verify compliance with the New START treaty.

No confirmation of these reports from Russian officials is available to Interfax.
