Putin signs order to conscript over 150,000 people in fall 2013

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree on the conscription of citizens for military service and on discharge of conscripts form military service in October-December 2013, the Kremlin press service has reported.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree on the conscription of citizens for military service and on discharge of conscripts form military service in October-December 2013, the Kremlin press service has reported.

A total of 150,030 people will be conscripted in the period between October 1, 2013 and December 31, 2013 under this decree.

The Russian government, executive administration bodies, Russian regions, and conscription commissions have been ordered to ensure the fulfillment of events associated with conscription of Russian citizens to military service.

The decree takes effect on the day of its official publication.

Russia wants more contract soldiers on the ground

Following reforms undertaken by former Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov, contract service in the Russian military has become competitive on the labor market. The Ministry of Defense is planning to spend $1.6 billion through 2015, to further promote military service under contract. Read more>>>
