A terrorist attack has been prevented in the Republic of Dagestan in Russia's North Caucasus, a National Antiterrorist Committee (NAC) spokesman said.
"Local residents spotted a suspicious item in the form of a 12-liter bucket 300 meters from the entry to the Makhachkala Highway (near the Kirgu shopping center) in Khasavyurt at around 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday," the spokesman said.
"The NAC headquarters in Dagestan were alerted about the find. Explosives experts of Russia's FSB [Federal Security Service] arrived on the scene and identified the item as an improvised explosive device," he said.
The bomb consisted of a container filled with a mixture of ammonium nitrate and aluminum powder and was equipped with a fuse, the spokesman said.
It contained an explosive the equivalent of 12 kilograms of TNT, he said.
"An improvised explosive device was defused in Dagestan. A terrorist attack was prevented," he added.
