Navalny calls new charges against him absurd

Opposition leader Alexei Navalny has denied his liability for the counts the Investigative Committee has charged him with in the so-called Yves Rocher case.

"The same sewing machine keeps on working," Navalny told Interfax.

Navalny said the investigators have presented him with the final version of the indictment, cutting the amount of damage he supposedly is responsible for nearly by half to 26 million rubles.

The investigation is about to be finished, after which Navalny and his defense team are to start examining its documents.

"In fact, the nonsense that was in the previous version remains in the case, which means that routine commercial activities that my brother was pursuing for three years have suddenly been declared fraud, and it is unclear even from the indictment what I have to do with this," Alexei Navalny said.

"The Kirovles case [in which Navalny was recently found guilty of embezzling assets belonging to the state-run timber company Kirovles] was originally invented for intimidation and in order to set the things going. It also looked absurd, and therefore another absurd case was needed so as to play safe in case the first case would break up," he said.

The Investigative Committee confirmed earlier to Interfax that Navalny had been presented with the final version of indictment for embezzling money belonging to the cosmetic firm Yves Rocher Vostok and for embezzling and laundering money belonging to Multiprofile Processing Company.
