Artist Pavlensky hospitalized after shocking

Young artist Pyotr Pavlensky from St. Petersburg, who is known for extravagant stunts, was hospitalized after a protest action in Moscow's Red Square on Sunday.

Pavlensky stripped naked in front of Lenin's Mausoleum, sat on the pavement and knocked a nail between stones through his genitals. Policemen wrapped the man in a cloth and called an ambulance, a source in Moscow law enforcement services told Interfax.

A video of the "performance" soon appeared on the Internet.

The man is to be questioned by police after he is aided by doctors, the source said.

Pavlensky is known for his shocking self-mutilating performances. He sewed his mouth up with a needle after the Pussy Riot singers were convicted for staging a punk prayer in the Christ the Savior Cathedral. He emerged start naked with barbed wire wrapped around him in front of the St. Petersburg legislature a few months sago.
