The CNN's world ugliest monuments list is unacceptable from the viewpoint of monuments' historic significance, the Russian embassy to the United States said in a statement.
"The decision taken by the CNN to include the monument 'Courage' dedicated to the defenders of the Brest fortress in Belarus in the list of the ugliest monuments in the world causes indignation," the statement reads.
The Brest Hero-Fortress "is a symbol of bravery of soldiers that were the first to fight fascist forces at the boundary of our Motherland, a memory to millions of warriors, who perished while fighting for freedom of peoples of the world from the 'nazi plague'," it reads.
"This is a monument to heroes, whom we honor," the embassy stressed.
"Such 'ratings' are unacceptable taking into consideration the historic significance of monuments. They offend memories of the perished one's, and simply do not go along with normal human perception," the Russian embassy thinks.
It was reported earlier that CNN posted on February 6 an article titled 'The world's ugliest monuments?' on its website. The Brest Hero-Fortress complex is atop the list. The article sparked large public outcry in Russia with Russian State Duma members, the presidential human rights council and the Moscow Helsinki Group condemning the article.
Later that day CNN apologized in the preface to the scandalous list. "We understand that the inclusion of the Brest Hero-Fortress in this article from a contributor has caused offense in Belarus and Russia. This was unintended and we apologize," it reads.
