Russia wins it first ever medal in men's snowboarding

Nikolai Olyunin, 22, won the silver medal in the Olympic snowboard cross race on Feb. 18. Not only did he bring the total of Russia's medals at the 2014 Sochi Games to 19, but he also made an important contribution to the history of Russian snowboarding: Olyunin's medal is Russia's first-ever in men's snowboarding tournaments.

Olyunin was expected to do well given his performance in the qualifying rounds. "Today I proved that there is snowboarding in Russia," - Olyunin said after the race.

The gold medal, however, went to France. Pierre Vaultiere was the first one to reach the finish line. His victory was captured by photo finish. U.S. snowboarder Alexander Diebold took bronze.
