The Federation Council has adopted a statement regarding the possible U.S. and EU sanctions, which says all of its members are ready to be included in the sanctions lists.
"Pursuant to this statement and the logic of our Western partners, we are ready for the entire Federation Council, all senators (…) to be added to the sanctions list," Federation Council Chairperson Valentina Matviyenko said.
The statement was adopted by 154 of 155 Federation Council members. One abstained.
"The sanctions parade continues and the lists are expanding," Federation Council Deputy Chairman Ilyas Umakhanov said, explaining why the statement concerning the U.S. and EU sanctions had been offered for the consideration of Federation Council members.
The statement "gives a principled opinion about impermissibility of political blackmail," he said.
This statement reflects the interest of Russia in the soonest political settlement in Ukraine and the preservation and development of friendly and neighborly relations between Ukraine and Russia.
"This sanctions contest is not our choice. We are open to a broad dialogue, in particular, on parliamentary cooperation platforms," the Federation Council deputy chairman stated.
U.S. President Barack Obama announced on Thursday that he had signed a document allowing sanctions to be imposed on Russia's key economic sectors.
