A truck with the bodies of ten people has been found on the grounds of an ammunition depot in the Trans-Baikal territory, which was hit presumably by a forest fire on Tuesday, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov told Interfax.

"A truck with ten dead people was found during engineering reconnaissance of the military garrison's arsenal territory at dawn," Konashenkov said.

"An officer, the commander of a logistics support center, a contract soldier accompanying him, and eight members of the military garrison's civilian personnel and the depot's paramilitary guard unit were found in a truck belonging to the garrison," he said.

Preliminary findings indicate that "a fire spreading with lightning speed from a forest on the arsenal's territory cut eight members of paramilitary guard personnel and garrison workers off from a safe exit out of the fire area," Konashenkov said.

"The commander of the logistics support center decided to personally evacuate them from the depot territory to a safe place in a service truck. In leaving the fire area, the truck with the people on board was hit by a sudden explosion and burned out within minutes," he said.

The fire at the engineering ammunition depot in the Trans-Baikal territory has been extinguished, Konashenkov said. The garrison's personnel and special hardware are currently engaged in washing down the arsenal's territory and the forest adjacent to it, he said.

"Due to skillful actions by servicemen and Emergency Situations Ministry units aimed at taking the fire under control, they managed to prevent a large fuel depot located next to the arsenal from catching fire last night," he said.
