Ukrainian government forces have effectively destroyed a railway bridge in the village of Andreevka in the Donetsk region, Vyacheslav Ponomaryov, the 'people's mayor' of Slavyansk, told Interfax.
"The enemy massively fired mortars and shrapnel upon the village of Semenovka and also shelled a railway bridge in the village of Andriyivka last night," Ponomaryov said.
The bridge was seriously damaged and requires restoration, as trains cannot pass through it now, Ponomaryov said.
Helicopters hovered over Slavyansk suburbs at night to protect security forces from the air, but they did not appear over the city itself, he said.
The situation in Kramatorsk remains stable, government forces are keeping a roadblock at the entrance to the city under their control, but the territory of Kramatorsk itself is controlled by the pro-autonomy militia opposing the Kiev authorities.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry has announced that government forces have encircled Slavyansk by roadblocks from all sides and are controlling the situation around the city.
The armed opponents of the Kiev authorities have occupied the administrative buildings of the city council, the police and Security Service departments, the Ukrtelecom office, and the central post office and are controlling 27 barricades and roadblocks in Slavyansk itself, the Defense Ministry reported on Saturday.
The government forces have taken control of an area within a 5-kilometer radius of the TV tower on Mount Karachun, it said.
