Donetsk militiamen claim control over airport terminal, perimeter; shooting stops

A spokesperson for the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) said on Wednesday afternoon that the shooting in the area beside the airport has stopped.

A spokesperson for the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) said on Wednesday afternoon that the shooting in the area beside the airport has stopped.

"The shooting near the airport has stopped. Militiamen are controlling the terminal and perimeter. There are no planes in the sky. The militiamen are reinforcing their barricades," said a statement posted on the DPR's official Twitter account.

It was reported earlier that military aircraft had appeared over Donetsk.

"There are military aircraft in the sky over Donetsk. Large-caliber machine-gun firing bursts are audible near the airport," according to a statement posted on the DPR's official Twitter account.

Eyewitnesses said two military aircraft were flying in the sky over Donetsk. They were hovering over the city's central Kyivsky and Voroshilovsky districts, causing a loud humming sound.

Eyewitnesses also said that shots were audible near the regional trauma unit. Local residents were afraid to go outside. Some offices and shops in this area had closed.

Shortly before that the official website of the Donetsk mayor, Oleksandr Lukyanchenko, said there had been shooting outside the local office building of the Ukrainian Security Service. "Shooting is audible near the regional SBU office on Shchors Street," the statement said.

In April the SBU building in Donetsk was occupied by armed supporters of Ukraine's federalization. The city administration asked residents in nearby areas not to leave their houses and not to come close to their windows.
