Ukraine's Acting President and Verkhovna Rada Chairman Oleksandr Turchynov has stated that a Ukrainian helicopter was shot down near Slovyansk, killing 14 military service members, including General Volodymyr Kulchitskyi, who were on board.

"I have just received information directly from near Slavyansk that terrorists fired MANPAD (man portable air defense weapon) and shot down our helicopter which was carrying the servicemen for rotation. Fourteen of our servicemen were killed along with General Kulchitskyi," he told parliament on Thursday.

Turchynov reassured citizens that the Ukrainian Armed Forces will free the country's east from militants and all those responsible will be held to account.

"I am convinced that our Armed Forces, our law enforcement structures will finish the business of purging from militants and all criminals […] will be terminated or end up on the dock," he said.

Earlier, the "people's mayor" of Slavyansk Vyacheslav Ponomaryov said the militiamen had shot down a Ukrainian helicopter near Slavyansk.
