Helicopter crashes in Murmansk region, 2 survivors hospitalized, 16 missing

The helicopter crashed into Lake Munozero. There were 18 or 19 people aboard, according to different sources. Two survived and were hospitalized. The search for the rest continues.

Two passengers of the Mil Mi-8 helicopter were saved by their airseats, a source in the region's emergency services told Interfax.

"The two helicopter passengers discovered by fishermen immediately after the crash were drifting along the lake surface in airseats to which they were fastened. But for the seats they must have drowned," the source said.

He said that the passengers had multiple injuries. "Early reports said one was in serious condition, the other in fair," the source said.

The passengers included Murmansk region deputy governor Sergei Skomorokhov, other high-ranking local officials and executives of Apatit OJSC, an Interfax source reported earlier.
