Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said he would convene the National Security and Defense Council on Monday, June 16, to discuss implementation of the peace plan for Donbass.
"Operations to restore the state border are on the agenda now. And, second, resolute steps should be taken to implement the peace plan in Donbass. We will act resolutely and consistently for the sake of peace in Ukraine," Poroshenko said in an address to the nation, posted on his website on Saturday.
Poroshenko said that the Ukrainian armed forces assumed a counteroffensive for the first time on Saturday. "I set the priority task to the military to establish control over the border, through which the militia gets weapons, hardware, replenishment and money. Peace, law and order have been established in Mariupol and a 248-kilometer stretch of the state border has been put under control in a special operation over the past four days alone," Poroshenko said.
"The militia has been neutralized in eleven populated areas" in the Luhansk and Donetsk regions, he said.
The Ukrainian military has destroyed seven motor convoys carrying weapons and ammunition, as well as several tanks and armored personnel carriers, and a missile launcher, he said.
Ukraine grieves over the heroes killed in action, he said. The Ukrainian leadership will do all it can to punish those guilty of that, he added.
"I have received numerous telephone calls from the leaders of democratic countries, who conveyed their deep condolences to us. We will do all we can to track down those guilty of killing Ukrainian servicemen," he said.
