Putin welcomes news about Medvedchuk's first contacts in Donetsk, Lugansk

President Vladimir Putin welcomes reports about leader of the Ukrainian Choice public movement Viktor Medvedchuk's first preliminary contacts in Donetsk and Lugansk, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Sunday.

"Putin welcomes reports about Viktor Medvedchuk's first preliminary contacts in Donetsk and Lugansk. Medvedchuk, as is known, is leader of the Ukrainian Choice public movement which consistently supports the idea of Ukraine's federalization. He is also respected in Kyiv and well known in the West," Peskov said.

Earlier reports said that during talks with representatives of the self-declared Donetsk People's Republic Medvedchuk secured the go-ahead to meet with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's mission for establishing dialogue between Kyiv and the southeastern regions, which Russia supporters at the ambassadorial level.

"The Russian president has said on many occasions that the crisis in Ukraine can be settled only through a peaceful dialogue, with due account taken of the interests of Ukraine's eastern regions," Peskov said.
