Participant of talks with DPR, LPR urges to extend ceasefire in southeastern Ukraine

Leader of the Ukrainian Choice public movement Viktor Medvedchuk said he supported extending the ceasefire for a longer period.

Leader of the Ukrainian Choice public movement Viktor Medvedchuk said he supported extending the ceasefire for a longer period.

"The Ukrainian authorities should support the opinion of Russian, German and French leaders, expressed during the telephone conversation on June 29, on extending the ceasefire for a longer period and on continuing consultations with representatives of conflict parties," Medvedchuk posted on Facebook on Monday.

"Only this path of peaceful dialogue, not of military actions, can lead to success," he said.

As to the possibility of being appointed chairman of the Donetsk regional state administration, Medvedchuk said: "In the past days some mass media outlets discuss with great enthusiasm the issue of my possible appointment as governor of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions. I have said repeatedly that I did not aspire and do not aspire to such power. Amid the situation existing in Ukraine my main goal, same as of any straight-thinking politician, is known well - to stop bloodshed, stabilize the situation in the east and restore peace in Ukraine. Most citizens of our country share this goal today. Everyone, who wants peace and calm and who aspires to preserve unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine," Medvedchuk said.

Medvedchuk is a participant in the trilateral contact group for resolving the situation in eastern Ukraine.

A ceasefire was announced in the counter-terrorism area until 10 p.m. on Monday.
