Five Ukrainian military servicemen have been killed and about 30 others injured in battles in southeastern Ukraine over the past 24 hours, Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council spokesman Andriy Lysenko said at a news conference on Saturday.

"Five servicemen of the Ukrainian armed forces have been killed and 27 others injured in exchanges of fire over the past 24 hours," Lysenko said.

The situation in the military operation area remains tense, and the government forces are continuing an offensive, he said.

Militias have shelled Ukrainian armed forcesfz' checkpoints 17 times over the past 24 hours, he said.

The press center of the military operation in southeastern Ukraine had reported earlier that 7 Ukrainian troops had been killed and 33 others injured.
