Three shells from the Ukrainian side hit the town of Donetsk in Russia's Rostov region on Sunday, an Interfax correspondent reports from the scene.
One hit a private garden and two - private homesteads standing next to each other. The houses were not badly damaged but their windows were broken.
The man killed by the shelling is survived by four children. His house is cordoned off by the military.
Town officials are at the scene trying to calm down local residents. It is not clear so far how damage to the owners of the houses will be compensated.
