Explosions are being heard in Mariupol, Donetsk region, which the city defense headquarters explains as fighting under way on the city's outskirts, the city web portal 0629 reports.
"Several tanks have moved from the side of Novoazovsk, and the military are stopping a minor breakthrough attempt," it said.
The defense headquarters also said at 1:45 p.m. with reference to the Azov volunteer battalion reporting to the Ukrainian Interior Ministry that fighting was going on near the village of Bezimenne, "but this is not a force that can accomplish a breakthrough."
"This looks more like a muscle-flexing game and reconnaissance in force," an Azov source said.
Donetsk regional administration head Serhiy Taruta said earlier that four tanks and about 40 people "are conducting reconnaissance in force, they left Bezimenne and have spread between the villages of Shyrokyne and Berdyanske."
The distance between Mariupol and Shyrokyne is about 23 kilometers.
At the same time, Azov's Facebook page says about 20 tanks have approached from Novoazovsk and started shelling Shyrokyne. The battalion is holding its position and is fighting back.
