Amnesty International asks for release of pilot Savchenko, film producer Sentsov

Amnesty International is calling on the Russian authorities to release and return pilot Nadezhda Savchenko and film producer Oleg Sentsov to Ukraine, Amnesty International Secretary General Salil Shetty told a press conference at the Interfax central office on Wednesday.

Shetty said Amnesty International believes these people were illegally taken from Ukraine, detained and taken into custody on fabricated charges.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk asked Shetty for his assistance in the release of Savchenko and Sentsov during a meeting with him on September 8.

The Russian Federal Security Service earlier reported on the detention of a group of Right Sector saboteurs who were preparing to carry our terrorist attacks in Yalta, Simferopol and Sevastopol. Sentsov was among the people detained on suspicion of involvement in the preparations for the terrorist attacks.

According to investigators, Savchenko acted as a centerer in the attack on two VGTRK journalists in Ukraine, who later died. She was charged with accessory to the journalists\' murder.
