Eastern Military District forces regroup for surprise check

Units of the Eastern Military District, the Airborne Forces and Long-Range Aviation have regrouped and deployed for a surprise check of their combat preparedness, the Russian Defense Ministry press service and information department said on Tuesday.

"Military units and formations of the 29th, 36th, 35th and 5th armies have regrouped and deployed on ranges in the Trans-Baikal, Kamchatka and Primorsky territories, the Sakhalin region and the Chukchi autonomous region. The troops have arrived in the areas of their operation and started to accomplish training missions," the report said.

Military units and formations have covered a distance of over 4,000 in their redeployment by rail, ship and plane and in a self-propelled mode.

Aircraft of the Air Force and the Air Force and Air Defense Command of the Eastern Military District were deployed on operative airfields. In all, about 100 planes and helicopters have been moved to a distance from 400 to 4,000 kilometers.

Pacific Fleet ships and submarines departed from their bases and deployed in the Sea of Okhotsk and the Sea of Japan.

"The entire transport network of the Eastern Military District, including water and air routes, has been engaged in regrouping forces for the surprise check. The task was accomplished with the assistance of territorial bodies of the Transport Ministry, Rosavtodor, Roszheldor and Rosmorrechflot. The relocation of forces by all means of transportation to the training areas is being provided in collaboration with them," the report said.

Over 20 military trains comprising more than 800 cars and flatcars and dozens of support vessels transported troops and hardware to the designated areas, the press service said. The Russian Defense Ministry and RZD allotted locomotives, special-purpose, passenger and cargo cars.

The troops involved in the surprise check "are accomplishing tasks of the deployment of command posts, reconnaissance and interaction of multi-service forces in the areas of their operation," the report said.

The total number of servicemen of the Russian Armed Forces representing five combined arms forces of the Eastern Military District, the Air Force and Air Defense Command, the Pacific Fleet and the commands of Long-Range and Military Transport Aviation who are engaged in the surprise check nears 100,000.

The surprise check of Eastern Military District troops will last for a week and end on September 18.
