The Vostok 2014 strategic command-and-staff drill has begun with narratives from the liaison office of the Russian Armed Forces General Staff received by the staffs of formations and military units, a source in the Russian Defense Ministry's press service and information department told Interfax on Friday.
In the past seven days, the Eastern Military District has been undergoing a surprise check of its combat preparedness. The formations have practiced a red alert, deployed in assembly areas and arrived in designated areas by plane, rail and sea and in a self-propelled mode. Some formations covered distances exceeding 4,000 kilometers.
"The staffs of formations and military units deployed, practiced the algorithm of operation of the combat control system and tested the ability of commanders of all levels to organize the deployment of troops in the areas and at ranges within the zone of their operations," the source said.
Formations and military units, which had completed the surprise check of combat preparedness of the Eastern Military District, were assembled in departure areas, training centers, ranges and military airfields and prepared for the Vostok 2014 strategic command-and-staff drill.
