China opposes sanctions against Russia - Matviyenko

China deems sanctions against Russia unacceptable.

China deems sanctions against Russia unacceptable.

"The Chinese side said that sanctions against Russia are unacceptable, counterproductive and illegal. Moreover, China does not support sanctions against our country," Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko said after talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

Matviyenko is in China on an official visit.

She said Moscow and Beijing's positions on this issue coincide. "China, like Russia, deems the application of sanctions by the European Union, the United States and some other Western countries, ineffective. It is an attempt to put pressure on a sovereign state, which Russia is. Russian-Chinese cooperation is strategic and cannot be influenced either by the political situation, or political ambitions," Matviyenko said.

"We have discussed Russian-Chinese cooperation with the Chinese leader. The words we heard are worth a lot. We are grateful to China for its position," she said.
