It is premature so far to expect the cancellation of EU sanctions against Russia, everything is going to depend on the situation in east Ukraine, a European diplomatic source told Interfax on Wednesday.

Answering a question about chances of the speedy cancellation of anti-Russian sanctions the Interfax interlocutor dismissed them as inventions.

One should listen attentively to what the heads of EU states are saying, the source said. They are saying that concrete positive developments are necessary in the sidelines [of the negotiating process in Ukraine] before the question of the cancellation of sanctions is raised, he added.

EU foreign ministers are very closely following the developments in Ukraine and are guided by the situation on the sidelines, they are capable of making flexible, adequate decisions that correspond to the developments, he said.

The source reminded Interfax that the situation in Ukraine and sanctions against Russia will be discussed at a meeting of EU foreign ministers on October 20.
