The United States declared itself the victor in the Cold War and decided to divide the whole world as it sees fit - and then simply made a mess of international relations, said Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"The impression is that the so-called victors in the Cold War decided to press the situation further, cut up the whole world entirely for itself, its own interests. And if the current system of international relations, international, the system of checks and balances stood in its way, these would immediately be declared useless, obsolete, subject to immediate demolition," Putin told a conference at the Valdai International Discussion Club on Friday.
"This is the way the nouveau riche behave, who suddenly find themselves in possession of enormous wealth and world leadership. And instead of the disposing of them competently and neatly, including in their own favor, of course, they simply made a mess of it," the president said.
The Cold War ended but it did not end in peace, i.e. clear and lucid agreements about new rules and standards, Putin said.
Having declared itself victors in the Cold War, the U.S. arrogantly assumed there was simply no need for this," he said. "Instead of establishing a new balance of power - a necessary condition of order and stability - on the contrary, steps were made which led to a sharp aggravation of the imbalance," the president said.
"A period of misinterpretations and hush-ups began in world politics. Under the pressure of global nihilism, international law was surrendering its positions step by step. Objectivity and fairness were sacrificed to the political expediency. Legal standards were substituted by arbitrary interpretation and partial views. Total control over the global media allowed declaring 'white' as 'black' and 'black' as 'white' if need be," Putin said.
