Expert says immediate Runet shutdown impossible

An immediate shutdown of Runet, the Russian segment of the worldwide web, is impossible, head of the national Internet domain coordination center Andrei Kolesnikov said at the opening ceremony of the Runet week, RIW14, on Wednesday.

"It is very difficult to break Runet. There have been a great deal of speculation about this but I can tell you as a technical specialist that an immediate shutdown of the Russian Internet segment is impossible," Kolesnikov said.

Runet "may be weakened and some of its segments may be turned inoperative. However, the reality is such that we have created a serious network, which is extremely hard to break," Kolesnikov said.

In his words, the RU domain ranks first amongst country domains.
