Aerospace security is becoming a major dimension of national security, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Gen. of the Army Arkady Bakhin said on Monday.
"The nature of an armed confrontation and the view of the armed forces' development are undergoing drastic transformations. Aerospace security is becoming a major dimension of national security, and aerospace defense is bound to occupy a central place in national defense," Bakhin said at a military history conference dedicated to the centenary of air defense.
"Leading nations of the world are placing their bets on gaining aerospace dominance and conducting massive aerospace operations at the very beginning of a war, which implies strikes on strategic and vital sites across the country," Bakhin said.
"Aerospace attack means will be the main threat to the Russian Federation at present and in the short-term future from the point of view of possible strikes on strategic facilities. The level of aerospace threats to Russia will invariably grow in a later period," Bakhin stated.
He said the threat should be repelled via "integration and modernization of all aerospace defense ways and means."
"The aerospace security of the country has actually become a key element of national security and the formation of the aerospace defense [segment] of the Armed Forces is turning into an urgent and most significant strategic task," Bakhin said.
Aerospace defense can be upgraded through the adjustment of its organizational structure and the procurement of new armaments and hardware for the Aerospace Defense Forces, he said.
"Given the tight budget, this will ensure a rapid response to possible aerospace threats, their adequate neutralization and maintenance of appropriate security levels," he said.
Aerospace defense occupies a central place in the provision of Russia's national security, he said in conclusion.
