Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Sunday insisted that the Middle East conflict issue be dealt with urgently.
"The Middle East issues need urgent solution," Lavrov said at a meeting in Rome with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. "We must together take action to prevent the situation from degrading, it is in our interest to discuss this today."
Kerry thanked Lavrov for making changes to his schedule and coming to Rome for what was this year's 17th meeting between them.
Earlier, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf had said the Middle East issue would be at the top of the meeting agenda in view of planned talks in Rome between Kerry and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
She said Kerry and Lavrov would also discuss the Syria and Ukraine issues.
