The Ukrainian decision to abandon its non-aligned status is counterproductive and escalates tensions, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.
"This is a counterproductive [move] which escalates confrontations and creates an illusion that a profound domestic crisis in Ukraine can be settled by the adoption of such laws," Lavrov told reporters on Tuesday responding to a question from Interfax.
A much more productive and "reasonable way would be to start a dialogue with that part of their own people which was fully ignored during the state coup," he underlined.
"There is no other way. Only a constitutional reform involving all regions and all political forces of Ukraine can set the right tone. The Ukrainian administration committed to starting this reform at the Geneva meeting back in April of this year," he said.
