Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel discussed the situation in Ukraine over the phone on Thursday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

"A number of these issues [regarding the Ukraine situation] was discussed yesterday in a telephone conversation between President Putin and Chancellor Merkel," he said at a press conference in Moscow.

Lavrov mentioned a ceasefire amongst pressing problems of Ukraine. He also said it was necessary to rebuild Donbas, restore "normal life" in southeastern Ukraine, establish economic contacts between the self-proclaimed republics and the rest of Ukraine and create conditions for the political process.

"Normandy Four" members are maintaining rather close contacts on each of these subjects, he emphasized.

"As soon as these debates, including the ones held at the Contact Group and between the capital cities, require the involvement of foreign ministers, we will be ready to hold this meeting [between foreign ministers of the "Normandy Four"]," Lavrov said.
