Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry met on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference on Saturday and were expected to discuss new French and German proposals for ways of settling the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
It was a while at the start of their meeting before the ministers shook hands - they talked to each other in whispers before that. Then they did shake hands, and Lavrov smilingly congratulated Kerry on New England Patriots' victory in Super Bowl, the National Football League's final game of the 2014 season, which was played on February 1.
On Friday, Feb. 6 German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande arrived in Moscow for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the situation in Ukraine. Merkel and Hollande had spent the previous day in Kiev, where they met with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko for about five hours.
