Sukhoi Su-24 crashes in Volgograd region

A Sukhoi Su-24 jet of the Russian Defense Ministry has crashed in the Kalachyovsky district of the Volgograd region, a source in the law enforcement authorities told Interfax.

A Sukhoi Su-24 jet of the Russian Defense Ministry has crashed in the Kalachyovsky district of the Volgograd region, a source in the law enforcement authorities told Interfax.

"The accident happened at 11:23 a.m. Moscow time. Reportedly, a Sukhoi Su-24 jet crashed during a training mission and fell down outside populated areas, in the Kalachyovsky district of the Volgograd region," the source said.

Search and rescue services have located the scene of the crash of a Sukhoi Su-24 frontline bomber in the Volgograd region.

"The crash scene has been cordoned off, a search and rescue team has put out the fire at the scene and measures have been taken to find the crewmembers," a source with the regional law enforcement and security services told Interfax-AVN.

Search and rescue teams have flown over the surrounding territory but have not found any parachutes canopies that the pilots would have used to eject. "The crew's fate is still unknown," the source said.

"The most likely cause in this situation would be a power or control system failure. As the pilots had 3 to 4 minutes to end the flight, it looks like they might not have had enough time to avoid mechanical breakdown," a flight safety expert told Interfax-AVN.

It was said earlier that the Su-24M crashed some 7 kilometers short of the airfield while approaching to land.
