Self-proclaimed Donetsk republic says it can pay for gas, provide itself with electricity

The self-proclaimed Donetsk people's republic (DNR) claims to be able to pay for Russian gas supplies itself and believes it can provide itself with electricity.

"The Ukrainian side has barbarically destroyed the taps on the gas pipeline leading to the DPR. They have ruined them absolutely. We are receiving gas from Russia now. If they [Ukraine] refuse to resume gas supplies now, then we'll think what to do. We are able to pay for gas from Russia on our own," DNR leader Oleksandr Zakharchenko told journalists.

Moreover, the DPR can provide itself with electricity, he said. "The electricity generated by the Starobesheve Thermal Power Plant would be enough for the entire DNR. The DNR will have its own energy," Zakharchenko said.

The self-proclaimed republic has also started trading with Russia, he said. "We have switched to trading with Russia and will ship food products from there," he said.
