France hopes Russia will join preparations for an international conference on climate change to be held in Paris in 2015, France's special presidential envoy for the protection of the planet, Nicolas Hulot, said on Tuesday.
"We need cooperation and engagement with Russia in ensuring that the Paris conference will be a success," he said at a press conference in Moscow.
Hulot also said that Moscow's role in tackling climate problems was extremely important given that Russia could set an example to other major emitters. "We are in need of Russia's assistance taking into account its influence within the BRICS group of nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa).
"The main goal of the upcoming conference in Paris is the signing of an agreement by the 195 member-states that would replace the current Kyoto Protocol on the reduction of green house gas emission," he said.
The 21st UN international conference on climate change is to be held in Paris in late November - early December 2015.
