Eminent Russian writer Maxim Gorky’s birth anniversary was marked at the Russian Centre of Science and Culture (RCSC) in New Delhi on March 20, 2015.
The event was jointly organized with Parichay Sahitya Parishad within the framework of the Year of Literature in Russia—2015.
The programme comprised a book exhibition “Maxim Gorky and his Era”, a multi-media presentation by the Russian language teacher Ms. Irina Utkina, screening of a film “Gypsies are found near Heaven” based on the story by Maxim Gorky “Makar Chudra”, followed by a discussion in association with Film society “Planet Cinema” and Citizens’ Film Forum.
In his observation while welcoming the gathering, Mr. Arseny Starkov, Chief Consultant, Information & Culture, RCSC, said that the function commemorating the great Russian writer who inspired the entire literary world, assumed special dimension as it was taking place within the framework of the Year of Literature in Russia—2015.
Maxim Gorky was a Russian and Soviet writer, a founder of the socialist realism literary method, and a political activist. His major works consisted of “My Childhood”, “My Universities”, “The Magnet”, “The Mother”, “Reminiscences of Tolstoy”, and others.
The film “Gypsies are found near Heaven” is Mosfilm production of 1975, directed by Emil Loteanu. The film tells the story of love between the gypsy girl Rada and the horse thief Zobar based on the short story by Maxim Gorky “Makar Chudra”.
