Ivanovo driver sentenced for knocking down U.S. traveler

The Furmanovo City Court in the Ivanovo region has sentenced Nikolai Maximov for knocking down and killing a travelling cyclist and citizen of the United States Ronald Makgeriti.

Maximov, 50, was driving his Gazelle vehicle from Kostroma to Ivanovo in July 2014 under the influence of alcohol, the Ivanovo region prosecution service said. The vehicle mounted the curb and knocked down Makgeriti near the village of Golchanovo in the Furmanovo district of the Ivanovo region. The traveler died instantly.

The court found Maximov guilty of violation of traffic rules under the influence of alcohol and causing death by negligence.

He was sentenced to three years in a convict settlement and deprived of a driving license for three years.

Makgeriti visited over 60 countries and came to Russia in summer 2014. His trip started from Kaliningrad, he visited St. Petersburg, Veliki Novgorod and Kostroma and was planned to see all towns of the Golden Ring and reach Volgograd.

The 60-year-old traveler was riding a Swiss bike with a unique reclining design.
