Russia laying rail line to bypass Ukraine - Defense Ministry

The Russian Army's Railroad Forces have begun laying an 18-kilometer line to enable trains running between central and southern Russia to bypass Ukraine on their journeys, Deputy Defense Minister General of the Army Dmitry Bulgakov said on Saturday.

About 900 troops are involved in laying the line, to link Zhuravka in Voronezh region to Millerovo in Rostov region, Bulgakov told reporters.

The soldiers would both build the earth bed for the line, for which more than 3.5 million cubic meters of earth would be used, and lay the tracks, he said.
