Only jointly can Russia and the United States tackle present-day global challenges, said Russian Ambassador at Large Vladimir Vinokurov.
"Unfortunately, relations between our two countries are at a low point, but we are brushing our problems away these days and thankfully remember Russian and American soldiers' heroic feats. Only jointly can Russia and the U.S. overcome the challenges all of us are facing. This gives us the hope for putting our countries back on the track of full-fledged cooperation," Vinokurov said at a meeting on Tuesday marking the 70th anniversary of the Elbe Day.
U.S. Ambassador to Russia John Tefft said in turn that the historical meeting of American and Soviet troops on the Elbe had not so much a military, but an enormous symbolic importance.
Even though the U.S. and Soviet political and economic systems were different during World War II, the two countries managed to cooperate for the sake of attaining the great goal of defeating Nazi Germany, the U.S. ambassador said. Although relations between the two countries entered a stage of the Cold War later, Moscow and Washington managed to prevent a direct conflict throughout the 50 years of geopolitical tensions," the U.S. diplomat said.
