Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will not attend the ceremony in Moscow to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters on Tuesday.
Japan’s ambassador to Moscow will represent Tokyo at the ceremony on May 9.
Suga added that no new dates have been fixed for Vladimir Putin’s visit to Japan, which was postponed last year on account of tensions in Ukraine.
Russia and Japan are yet to sign a World War 2 peace treaty, with the latter claiming 4 islands in the Southern Kurils chain.
