Putin sees EXPO 2015 as opportunity to pool efforts for sustainable development

Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent greetings to the exhibitors and guests of Universal Exhibition EXPO 2015 which opens in Milan on May 1.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent greetings to the exhibitors and guests of Universal Exhibition EXPO 2015 which opens in Milan on May 1.

"EXPO 2015 represents an excellent opportunity for experts, academics, representatives of the business community and civil society, and heads of specialized agencies from different countries to reflect together on ways to achieve sustainable development in all regions of the globe," say the greetings by President Putin posted on the Kremlin website.

The theme chosen for this year's Exhibition, Feeding the planet: Energy for life, is perfectly in keeping with the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, the president emphasized.

Russia makes a significant contribution to global food security, Putin continued.

"Russia accounts for one tenth of the world's agricultural land, one fifth of the planet's fresh water supply and it makes a significant contribution to global food security. The Russian pavilion at EXPO 2015 is highly representative and reflects the huge agricultural and industrial potential our country has to offer, its great cultural and humanitarian heritage and its acknowledged role in world science," the president stated.
