Russian opposition members do not plan to meet with Merkel in Moscow

A Just Russia faction MP Dmitry Gudkov has denied reports that members of the Russian opposition may meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is expected to visit Moscow on May 10.

A Just Russia faction MP Dmitry Gudkov has denied reports that members of the Russian opposition may meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is expected to visit Moscow on May 10.

"I have checked this through my channels. This is total nonsense. There will be no such meeting. This option has not been discussed or arranged," Gudkov told Interfax on Tuesday.

The German side has not contacted representatives of the Russian opposition concerning such a meeting, he said.

Gudkov also denied claims that activists Alexei Navalny and Ilya Yashin selected opposition members who would attend this meeting.

The Izvestia newspaper reported earlier that Merkel could meet with Russian opposition members during her visit to Moscow on May 10. According to the newspaper, representatives of Russia's non-systemic opposition, among them Navalny, Yashin, Vladimir Milov and Leonid Volkov, met on April 30 to discuss a possible meeting with Merkel.

Izvestia also said that Navalny, Yashin, Mikhail Kasyanov, as well as Dmitry Gudkov and Gennady Gudkov could take part in such a meeting with the German chancellor.
