Konstantin Kosachev, the head of the Federation Council committee on international affairs, predicts that the geopolitical opponents of BRICS will try to artificially cause division in BRICS.
"We are facing a stage, it has not begun yet, but it will probably come when BRICS will be faced with attempts to cause division in it, to artificially cause a conflict in it based on national interests. One needs to understand that, it's a real challenge to BRICS," Kosachev said at the opening ceremony of the 7th Academic BRICS Forum in Moscow on May 22.
Kosachev said no one believed in BRICS at the initial stage, but now "it is definitely believed in."
Kosachev said he is convinced that the BRICS countries will take the new challenges well.
He believes the current situation of BRICS is "a request for real reform of the current system of international relations, for its formation based on the new principles, in a way that those who considered themselves to be unconditional and undisputable leaders of humanity in the past few decades did not see it."
Kosachev believes this new format is determined by at least three components. Firstly, equality of participants. Secondly, recognition of the fact that the countries comprising BRICS differ from each other by their political systems and sometimes by their economic systems, have different transitions and humanitarian views, but are not trying to make any of the models dominating. Thirdly, an attempt to combine interests that do not always coincide, instead of replacing and forcing them on anyone.
"These three principles appear to me to be very seriously different from what we see in other places, the EU, the OSCE and many other regional organizations that exist in the world and that are mainly based on the fact that there are countries or groups of leading countries and there are countries or groups of countries that follow the leaders' policies," Kosachev said.
