Investigators have officially charged Lithuanian citizen Arstidas Tamosaitis with espionage, defense attorney Anatoly Abritsov has announced.
Tamosaitis was detained in Moscow.
"My client stands accused of espionage, a count stipulated in Article 276 of the Russian Criminal Code," Abritsov told Interfax on May 26.
He confirmed that that he had appealed the court's arrest warrant. "As a defense attorney I disagree with this court ruling and I expressed my disagreement in an appeal, filed in compliance with the Russian Criminal Code. I will use all legal instruments to defend Tamosaitis now and in the future," Abritsov said.
The Russian Federal Security Service reported on May 20 on the detention of a Lithuanian intelligence officer while receiving secret information. "A citizen of Lithuania, a Lithuanian intelligence officer was detained in Moscow on May 19. The foreign intelligence officer was caught red-handed while receiving secret documents from a Russian citizen," the Russian Federal Security Service public relations center told Interfax.
"The foreigner was taken to the Russian Federal Security Service reception office for questioning. After evidence was presented, he confessed that he is an officer with the Second Investigation Department under the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defense," the Russian Federal Security Service public relations center said. The Lithuanian spy is currently in the Lefortovo detention facility. Necessary investigative actions are being conducted with him.
The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry currently has no official information on this event, Lithuanian Foreign Ministry media adviser Kestutis Vaskelevicius Media Advisor told BNS.
