Several thousand people have gathered in central Donetsk to remember the people killed in recent attacks in the cities of Donbass, the Donetsk News Agency reported on May 28.

"According to law enforcement agencies, some 7,000 people came to the rally. The rally is being held on the day of mourning declared in the DNR for the victims of the Ukrainian attacks," the report says.

The people have gathered near a small podium. Many of them are holding DNR flags bound with black mourning bands, the report says.

Alexander Zakharchenko, the head of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, earlier declared May 28 a day of mourning.

"Expressing our mourning for the citizens killed in the barbaric attacks by the Ukrainian armed forces on the populated areas of the Donetsk People's Republic, I decree to declare May 28, 2015 a day of mourning," Zakharchenko said in his decree.

Flags are flying at half-mast in the DNR on May 28 and it has been recommended to culture establishments and television and radio companies to cancel entertainment events and programs.

According to the DNR Defense Ministry, five civilians were killed and nine people, including three children, were wounded in the attacks on Horlivka by the Ukrainian military.
