Russia should not close its doors to foreign athletes but a great number of legionnaires hamper the development of Russian sports, President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday.
"Sports in Russia should not stew in its own juice," Putin said addressing a session of the Council on the physical culture and sport. "Of course, we need specialists, coaches, medics and legionnaires as Russian fans and spectators want to see star athletes and specialists."
"However, excessive participation of foreign specialists and athletes in our sports movement and clubs does not help the development of Russian sports but hampers it and creates problems in the formation of national teams," he said.
