Criminal charges have been brought against a resident of the Krasnoyarsk territory detained at a Moscow airport before he could board a flight to the war in Syria, the Krasnoyarsk territorial prosecution service said on June 10.

The unemployed 25-year-old man, headed for Istanbul, was detained at Moscow Vnukovo Airport on June 4. "He intended to cross into the Syrian Arab Republic and join a unit fighting against Syrian government troops. The detainee did not deny his intentions during a police interview," the report said.

The territorial department of the Federal Security Service launched a criminal inquiry on a count of "preparations to join an illegal armed unit acting in the territory of a foreign state with purposes conflicting with Russian interests." The territorial prosecution service upheld the case as lawful.

The suspect is under arrest. He may be given a sentence of up to ten years in prison.
