The victory of the Russian national team over the team from Spain in Davis Cup may be called a miracle, head of the Russian Tennis Federation Shamil Tarpischev told TASS on Monday.
The game of Group 1 of Europe/Africa was held in Vladivostok on July 17-19. After the first day, the Russian team lost 0:2, but finally won with the score 3:2.
"As the final fifth game with Spain was over, the first thought was ‘It can’t be true’," head of the federation said. "We were losing 0:2 and losing in everything. We even were not leading in any first games, and in those three games where we won later on we were on the edge of failure, but a miracle happened. The team made a heroic deed. It is for the third time in history of the Russian national team, where it wins after the score of 0:2."
He said it took him four hours to analyse mistakes of the first two games.
"I met with the team and discussed their mistakes — this has worked."
Davis Cup is structured with a 16-nation World Group, contested over four weekends during the year. The remaining countries are then divided into three regional Zones depending on their location. In March Germany, the US, the Czech Republic, Italy, Brazil, Croatia, Japan and Switzerland lost their games of the 1/8 final and in September they will be competing in the World Groups semifinals.
